Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is Reiki?

Reiki is a Japanese energy healing technique focused on promoting relaxation and well-being. It involves the gentle laying of hands on or near the body to facilitate a flow of positive energy. Learn more about Reiki here.

  • What is Motoki?

Motoki is another Japanese energy healing technique that harnesses incredibly powerful earth-based energy to make real change in the physical body. It’s quick and feels amazing! Motoki is considered an endangered, nearly lost art. Learn more here.

  • Do I need to prepare for a session?

It’s helpful to avoid excessive caffeine and/or alcohol 8-12 hours before your session. Please note: The session cannot be conducted if the client is under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Some people like to reflect or meditate on what they’d like to get out of the session beforehand, but this is optional.

On your appointment date, just come as you are, wearing comfortable clothing.

  • What should I expect during a session?

Check out the Services page for a description of what's included in a Reiki session.

Sessions are conducted fully clothed. You will be invited to remove your coat, shoes, glasses, hat, etc. You may wish to wear or bring socks.

During a session, you'll typically feel deeply relaxed. Some people fall asleep, or go into a dream-like deep relaxation state. Some experience sensations like warmth or tingling. There are a wide variety of responses possible during a typical energy session, and all are normal, safe, and valid.

  • Do I need to "believe" in energy healing for it to work?

No belief system is required. Reiki works in a similar fashion to acupuncture or Qigong. Simply be open to the experience, and use your own judgement. A wise person once said this about energy healing: “You don’t need to believe it will work. But it helps if you want it to.”

  • Is energy healing associated with any religion?

No, energy healing is not tied to any specific religious belief. It's a holistic practice open to people of all faiths or none at all.

  • Can energy work replace medical treatment?

Reiki, Motoki, and energy healing in general are complementary therapies, not a substitute for professional medical care. They works in harmony with other forms of treatment. If you need medical treatment, seek the advice of a qualified medical professional. Michelle is not a qualified medical professional. If you are having a medical emergency, call 9-1-1.

  • How many sessions do I need?

The number of sessions varies depending on your individual goals and needs. Most people find some benefit from a single session, but usually 3-5 sessions are ideal to determine if Reiki is beneficial in your situation. You may experience healing much sooner, later, or not at all, depending on a variety of factors. I have several clients who visit me weekly, biweekly, or monthly for a "tune up". This is considered preventative maintenance, but is not necessary. Every situation is unique.

  • Can I talk during a session?

You can, but most clients prefer to relax in quietude to fully absorb the healing energy. There are times when a strong feeling may come up, and I welcome feedback in the moment to best work with the energy. I may also break the silence to ask a probing question or check in with you about what I am observing in your body. Of course, if you are uncomfortable physically or emotionally and need an adjustment, break, or to discontinue the session, let me know immediately.
