The universe is in balance- and you can be too

On every conceivable level, the universe operates in a delicate dance of balance. From unimaginably massive galaxies to the tiniest particles, there is an intricate interplay of forces that maintains equilibrium. This equilibrium extends to every facet of our lives, both seen and unseen, and I believe it is guiding us towards a deeper understanding of ourselves and the world around us.

At the heart of this balance lies the principle of energy exchange. Just as the universe constantly gives and receives energy in a never-ending cycle, so too do we as human beings participate in this exchange. Every thought we think, every action we take, emits energy that ripples out into the universe, affecting the balance in small and not-so-small ways.

Understatement: achieving balance in our energetic exchanges is not always easy.

On a daily basis, we face challenges and hardships that can disrupt our equilibrium. We may find ourselves giving more than we receive, or receiving more than we give, leading to feelings of imbalance and disconnection, or worse- outright resentment, hostility, and anger. (And we often store that yucky stuff in our bodies, leading to illness.  That’s another topic for another day.)

I think it’s critical to acknowledge that achieving balance often involves stepping outside of our comfort zones and doing hard things.  Did you know that you can do hard things?  It’s true, I promise.  Facing challenges, especially within relationships, can lead to profound growth and a deeper understanding of ourselves and others. Finally telling your boss you won’t be answering calls outside of work hours.  Leaving a toxic relationship.  Setting explicit boundaries with your parents.  While these actions may feel uncomfortable or daunting, they ultimately have massive potential to positively influence our sense of balance and happiness, in the long run. By confronting and overcoming obstacles, we grow more resilient, compassionate, and wise, and we expand our capacity for love and connection.

People often ask: Why does imbalance exist in the first place? Why are there "ugly" things in our world, such as pain, suffering, and negativity?

The answer lies in the inherent polarity of existence. Just as light cannot exist without darkness, so too do we need contrast in order to fully appreciate the beauty and wonder of life.  We can’t understand what love feels like if we don’t understand what it feels like to go without it.

In the teachings of the Ra Material, for example, it is explained that the universe operates according to the Law of One, which emphasizes the interconnectedness of all things. Within this framework, every experience, whether positive or negative, serves as an opportunity for growth and learning. It is through embracing the full spectrum of existence that we come to understand ourselves more deeply and evolve towards higher states of consciousness.  (If you want to open up a highly enjoyable can of woo-woo worms, check out more at lawofone.info.)

How can we cultivate balance in our daily lives? Here are some practical tips that can help:

  • Mindfulness: Take time each day to quiet your mind and tune into the present moment. Meditation or mindfulness exercises can help you become more aware of thoughts, emotions, and energy patterns, allowing you to consciously direct your energy in alignment with your intentions.  No time for that?  I enjoy zoning out while stuck in rush hour traffic.  Plenty of time there to contemplate.  (Just be sure to keep your eyes open.)

  • Self-care: Prioritize activities that nourish your body, mind, and soul. Whether it's getting enough rest, eating nourishing foods, or engaging in activities that bring you joy, self-care is essential for maintaining energetic balance and resilience in the face of life's challenges.

    • Life Pro Tip: A lot of folks engage in what I call reactive self-care.  They get burnt out or stressed out and they try to fix it all with a one-hour pedicure, for example. Hey, that’s ok!  Kudos for acknowledging the imbalance exists and doing something about it.  But what if we engage in preemptive self care?  A weekly Reiki session is enough to keep a lot of people in balance and ready to face their daily stressors.  (And check out my blog post on keeping a daily practice.  It can be a game changer, for real.)

  • Setting Boundaries: Learn to recognize your own needs and boundaries, and communicate them clearly to others. By establishing healthy boundaries in your relationships and interactions, you can prevent energy drain and maintain a sense of autonomy and self-respect.  This is a toughie, I know!  You might need to talk with a therapist and learn some communication skills that can help, and then practice…a lot.  But it’ll be worth it.  Setting boundaries is honestly the very most important way you can protect your energetic balance.

  • Gratitude and Generosity: Cultivate an attitude of gratitude and generosity towards yourself and others. When you express gratitude for the blessings in your life and extend kindness to those around you, you open yourself up to receiving abundance in return, fostering a positive flow of energy in your life.  Don’t believe me?  Try it for a week and see what happens.  The results can feel downright miraculous.

  • Inner Transformation: Explore practices that support inner transformation, such as journaling, creative expression, or energy healing modalities like Reiki. These practices can help you uncover and transmute any stagnant or discordant energy within yourself, allowing you to align more fully with your true essence.

Here’s what I believe: achieving balance is about making conscious choices that allow you to navigate life's ups and downs with resilience and confidence. When you cultivate balance in your energy, emotions, and actions, YOU reap ALL the rewards and get to fully embody what it means to be human. Who doesn’t want greater peace of mind, improved relationships, and a deeper sense of fulfillment? By striving for harmony within yourself, you not only enhance your own quality of life but also contribute positively to the collective energy of the universe. And in this time and space, we need your good vibes more than ever!
